Surreal Resuscitation

BabyAnne

Yesterday I was on a 1st Aid refresher course. There were 9 other people in the group - all of them women. When we got to learning baby resuscitation all of us were given a ‘training baby’ and then together we practised the 30 chest compressions, rhythmically pumping the baby’s chests. To help us keep time (100BPM) the instructor suggested we sing Nelly The Elephant as we went.

Halfway through, I stopped and looked up. All 9 women were totally engrossed in their task of gently pounding plastic babies, while cheerfully singing along to ‘Nelly’. The whole time there was this background hiss of air being squeezed in and out of small plastic mouths which only created a percussion to the song.

I have to go back next week…

REVIEW: Mika - Life In Cartoon Motion

Mika - Life In Cartoon Motion

I first heard of Mika sometime before Christmas when ‘Relax (Take It Easy)’ was played on the radio. I loved the song then but had little clue about the artist or indeed this album. I finally downloaded it this week after all the hype of the single ‘Grace Kelly’ staying at the top of the singles chart for a number of weeks.

I knew it was going to be pop and I knew it was going to be camp, but I was little prepared for how much fun it is! The whole album is very well produced with a wide range of brass, strings, loops, synths and heavy bass filling out the gloriously simple, catchy melodies. Genre-wise it’s a kind of over-the-top, quirky, exaggerated pop: something familiar, but strangely fresh. Mika’s voice is simply astounding with loads of dramatic falsettos and wonderfully flamboyant parts highlighted by strong harmonies. There are obvious comparisons with Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Scissor Sisters, etc. but somehow he also manages to sound unique too.

After the big single ‘Grace Kelly‘, my favourite stand-out tracks are ‘Lollipop‘ a brilliantly sugary sweet, bouncy, sing-a-long tune that gets you tapping your feet from the beginning, ‘Relax (Take It Easy)‘ a classic 80’s Pet Shop Boys-esque song, ‘Any Other World‘ a gentle, flowing bitter-sweet track with lush strings, and ‘Big Girls (You Are Beautiful)‘ a funky, disco fun-filled homage to ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ by Queen.

In all, it is musically a very good album although it won’t be to everyone’s taste. I imagine that opinion will become highly polarised after a while with listeners committed to either destroying or proselytising the larger-than-life singer. In the meantime it’s worth seeing what all the fuss is about.

Street Gangs

You can tell I’m on a “study day” today because of the amount of blog posts!

gang.jpg
There’s a good article on the rise of teenagers in street gangs on the BBC News Magazine.

“There’s a real power in it, especially if someone has a problem and you deal with it. The camaraderie is unbelievable and is a bit like the Army. People are dependent on you and you have a role. There’s the safety, the friendship and there’s the purpose.”

A role could be keeping the gun, cutting up the drugs or even fixing the mopeds, he says.

“You’re getting affirmation from alpha males. Another man telling you that you are good or worthwhile is very, very important.”

There are obviously many factors for why people join gangs, but it’s really interesting that it’s a sense of ‘belonging’ or worth that is mentioned here. These are the same reasons why many people find Christianity (and consequently church) attractive; it helps them to feel part of something and gives them a role.
Providing people with something to belong to has been a big part of my work with The WIRE. Although we run clubs and activities, the bigger picture is about generating “community esteem”. Building community, linking people together, giving them worth… perhaps that is part of the answer to the current problems with gang culture.

Heart Attack Baby back from dead!

A baby boy who was pronounced dead after a heart attack came back to life 30 minutes later as he lay in his grieving parents’ arms.

There’s no mention of God or Christianity in the article, but it certainly looks like His handiwork to me!

Youth Worker Suspended

The BBC is running a story about a group of County Durham teenagers who were allegedly abandoned by their youth worker in the countryside at 9:30pm in the pouring rain after they were “misbehaving”. A worker has been suspended pending an enquiry.

They said they had been accused of misbehaving and were told to make their own way back to a Downpatrick hostel.

The seven teenagers aged between 12 and 14 are from County Durham.

They were on a half term break with their youth club.

They said that last Wednesday at about 2130 GMT they were told to get ready to go out and then were dropped off in heavy rain and told to find their own way back.

They claim they were walking for an hour in the dark when they called at a house and the homeowner alerted the police.

Although the scenario seems quite shocking, it is clear that the full facts have not yet emerged. All of the quotes are simply allegations and I am very interested to see the official version of the story. As the Council spokesperson says: “Suspension in such circumstances is a neutral act and does not imply wrong-doing by the member of staff, but it is an appropriate measure pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Lookalike?

Two times in my life I have been told that I look a bit like Jamie Oliver… both were this week by people totally unconnected to each other!

It’s got to be something to do with the fact that my hair’s grown out a bit because I actually look nothing like the bloke! Still, it’s a reasonable compliment.

After reading Dave and Rosie’s blog posts on the new range of PG Tips monkeys that are available, Kirsty has just run down to Sainsbury’s to get her own mini-monkey!

It’s pretty cute and is a welcome addition to our monkey collection, but we now have a lot of tea to get through…

Rough Recordings

Today I was supposed to be laying down some vocals for the upcoming Spring Harvest Pre School Praise 2 Album. I did some tracks on two New Wine Kids recordings last summer which went quite well, so my mate Andy asked me to come back and do a session for this new album too.

Unfortunately, I picked up a head cold and sore throat while in Wales this week and so the two of us were in the studio today laughing at my piteous attempts at singing a melody! It took some time for my voice to warm up enough to squeeze out a half decent sound, but we eventually got a few tracks done (with the help of AutoTune). Hopefully I’ll be better enough to finish off the others tomorrow.

Talking of Spring Harvest, I’m reminded that Kirsty and I have our photo up on their website now!

Teenage gestures

It was possibly not the most subtle thing he could have done, but 17 year old Ryan Florence made a ‘gun’ sign when David Cameron visited his estate, and has caused another huge debate in the media over anti-social behaviour. Click here for the full story.

From the article:

The youth, 17-year-old Ryan Florence, is electronically tagged after being in a young offenders’ institution.

Florence, who served four months for burglary and street robbery, told the BBC the gesture was just “messing about”.

“He says he’s coming round to stop the crime and that, but what’s he doing? He’s not stopping us, is he?,” he said.

He has said he is in a gang called Benchill Mad Dogs and regularly smokes cannabis and takes cocaine.

He told the BBC: “Drugs are everywhere here. I smoke weed every day and all my friends do as well. There’s nothing wrong with it as long as you don’t get caught.”

Personally, I think that Mr Cameron is onto some good things regarding his approach to young people. After his surprisingly insightful view of young people in hoodies, he’s also now talking about local community initiatives and supporting single parent families. Let’s hope he can deliver more than some smooth words.

He said more money should be given to community workers - not bureaucrats - who make a “real difference” to people’s lives. He also talked about absentee fathers, as well as getting to the “roots of crime”.

Going Away

Today I’m off to Brecon in Wales for my last residential with The WIRE. The last two years we’ve been to the same place and I’ve always been stunned by the beautiful scenery. I’m on the lookout for more over the next few days!

We’re taking 9 young lads with us to do rock climbing, caving and other outdoor activities so it’s likely to be wet and cold…

See you on Friday.
