Digital Youth Work Predictions

MAS over at The (Late) Breakfast Society has posted a collection of predictions for how online youth work could develop over the next 12 months. Below is a slideshow of some of the predictions, but it’s worth clicking through to the post to read the rest of his comments. He says:
Overall there’s a sense of [...]

Reflections on Youthwork The Conference

I meant to post this on Monday, but didn’t really get round to writing it!
I have to say, I really enjoyed this year’s conference. The theme was ‘Deeper’, and was focused on looking after and nurturing your own soul (instead of simply giving out all the time). I actually found the theme refreshing and [...]

Linkage

Sorry about the vast amount of “youth work links” posts recently. I’ve been using the WordPress Postalicious plugin to automatically publish posts when I add enough new links to my Delicious account. Obviously I’ve been adding too many links, so I’ve changed the settings to only publish once a week.
You should now get a [...]

Training Day: Interactive & Visual Teaching

This Saturday, Arun Community Church are having our regular ChYL (Children’s & Youth Leaders) Training Day. We get all of our staff and volunteers together about 3 times a year to catch up, communicate news and get some relevant training.
This time, I’m excited that we’ve got well-known children’s worker and teacher Jim Bailey coming to [...]

CompassionArt

Today sees the launch of the new CompassionArt album and accompanying book here in the UK (US readers have to wait until the new year!). Set up by some friends here in Littlehampton, “CompassionArt is a charity that joins the dots between art and poverty. It raises money to help breathe life into the poorest [...]

“Who Are You” YouTube Campaign

I posted last week about Barnardo’s Children In Trouble Campaign. I’ve since had various discussions with people who feel that whilst the sentiment of the campaign is great, the shock tactics could perhaps have been better replaced by actually showing young people in a positive light. MAS posted his response here and later updated it [...]

Youthwork The Conference

Just a quick note to say that I’m off to Eastbourne this afternoon with my colleague Pippa for this year’s Youthwork The Conference. We’ve had a great time the last 2 years, so am looking forward to listening, thinking and catching up with fellow bloggers.
Anyone else out there going?

Teenagers ‘optimistic about jobs’

The BBC News website is running a story about the findings of a government-commission poll of 15 to 19 year olds. Of the 765 surveyed, nearly 90% felt they would find work - an overwhelming positivity from the young people.
However, when contrasted with another survey on adult’s views of young people joining the workforce, it [...]

UK Society “condemning children”

While off last week, I was invited to go to the launch of Barnardo’s new “Children In Trouble” campaign. As I was unable to make it, I watched with interest what the campaign would focus on. Yesterday, I found this article from BBC News covering the new TV Advert.

In summary, Barnardo’s commissioned a YouGov [...]

DIY King!

My apologies for the distinct lack of posts these last 2 weeks. I’ve had some time off and have been preparing for the arrival of Jolly Junior by doing up the house! We’ve ordered carpet, done 2 trips to Ikea, built some wardrobes and boxed them in, fixed various little things, ordered a fireplace and [...]

Don’t Talk to… Youth Workers?

I’ve been aware for some time of various government incentives to try and track young people through their involvement in statutory agencies. I know of colleagues in Westminster who carry around barcode scanners to record and identify each young person they come into contact with so they can track their progress. This drive towards accreditation [...]
