This week at Ignite, our youth group for Year 7-9 (11-14 year olds), we had a fantastic Inflatable evening. Around 50 young people including about 5 new ones turned up to jump, run, bounce and laugh around. We had a lot of fun.
As I was walking through the room I spotted one of the new kids; a really small boy on a bouncy castle. Doing a double-take I suddenly realised the lad was Louie, the son of a family I’ve known for years and a boy who I remember being born not so long ago! He was obviously having a great time so I went over to investigate. I said “Hi Louie, nice to see you mate. How old are you now?”
Louie glanced nervously over to his friend George who comes along regularly and answered: “e… eleven”. It sounded like even he wasn’t sure!
I said “No you’re not Louie, I know your older siblings and your mum! You must be in Year 4? Year 5?”
He replied sheepishly: “Yeah. Year 5… nearly”
It turns out Louie is now 8 years old and in Year 4 at junior school. He’d come along with George (who is 11), and signed himself in with a birthday of 1996 (making him 11). My colleague on the door even challenged him on it, but Louie was so confident he was let in.
I phoned Louie’s parents who were apologetic and came and got him. Louie himself was pretty understanding (and got to play for about half an hour anyway). It just struck me as highly amusing that kids as young as eight are trying to sneak into youth group! I took it as a compliment and hope he’ll still feel that way in a few years.
